Jon Bernthal reveals what keeps his 15-year marriage strong with Erin Angle

Jon Bernthal is opening up about what has kept his marriage to Erin Angle strong after more than a decade together, emphasizing partnership, consistency and intentional effort to stay connected.

During a recent interview with Esquire, the 49-year-old actor reflected on his relationship with Angle, whom he married in September 2010, and described their bond as something he continues to actively nurture rather than take for granted.

“My marriage with her, it's very aspirational,” he said. “Like, I'm still begging her to go out with me, begging her to hang out with me.”

Jon Bernthal also spoke about the importance of showing up for one another in practical, everyday ways, noting that long-term relationships require ongoing effort and attention rather than assumption or complacency.

“There are things that my wife depends on me to be, and I love being those things,” he said. “Like, when I can be those things, and when I'm not those things, it doesn't work.”

He went on to describe marriage as a “genuine partnership,” stressing that both people need to continue “dating each other” over time and remain attentive to each other’s growth.

Bernthal added that being dependable is central to his role within the relationship and that prioritizing his partner is part of the commitment he made.

“And I think that a marriage is a genuine partnership, and it's up to you to keep dating each other, and to keep being friends, and to acknowledge the growth in each other,” he said. “But mostly, you know, it's you got to be there.”

Erin Angle and Bernthal first met in their early 20s at a party in 2000 before marrying in Potomac, Maryland, in 2010.

The couple now share three children together: sons Henry and Billy, and daughter Adeline.
