One person has died and another has been injured following a shooting at Wilmington Hospital in Delaware on Tuesday, June 16, prompting a major police response and a prolonged lockdown of the medical facility.

As per People, authorities said Wilmington Police Department officers were called to ChristianaCare’s Wilmington Hospital around 3:30 p.m. local time after reports of gunfire inside the building. When officers arrived, they discovered two people with gunshot wounds.

One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second victim was transported for treatment. Officials have not released their identities or the condition of the surviving victim.

Police Launch Investigation as Suspect Taken Into Custody

Police said the suspect was later taken into custody after an extensive search of the hospital, which was placed under lockdown for several hours as officers cleared the building floor by floor.

Law enforcement has not officially confirmed the suspect’s identity or employment status, although reports from local media indicated the shooter may have been a hospital employee who targeted two colleagues. Investigators have not verified a motive.

Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos said officers prioritised securing the hospital and ensuring no further threat remained during the search operation.

ChristianaCare confirmed that the lockdown was later lifted and said normal operations were gradually restored following the incident.

“Our hearts are with the victims, their families and loved ones, and everyone affected by today’s violence,” said ChristianaCare president and CEO Jennifer Schwartz in a statement. “This is a tragic and deeply painful moment for our community.”

Delaware Governor Matt Meyer also expressed condolences, thanking emergency responders and hospital staff for their swift action in containing the situation.

“The ChristianaCare Wilmington Campus experienced an act of violence this afternoon that has tragically resulted in the loss of one life and injured another,” he said.

Hospital officials added that wellbeing and behavioural health support had been made available for staff affected by the shooting.
