Two men charged with murder of Fisk University basketball player Andre Bell
Police say jealousy over a girlfriend was the motive behind Andre Bell's January shooting
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department announced on Monday that Brayden Carter, 19, and Damarion Coleman, 18, had been arrested in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and charged with multiple offences, including first-degree murder, in a press release issued by MNPD.
Carter was taken into custody by TITANS Unit detectives during a vehicle stop after he left his home on Melodic Way in Murfreesboro, with detectives recovering a pistol from the car. Coleman was arrested separately at his Murfreesboro home by Murfreesboro Police SWAT officers.
Who was Andre Bell
Bell was a sophomore at Fisk University in Nashville, where he studied business administration and played for the university's basketball team, according to a statement issued by the university at the time of his death. Originally from Jackson, Tennessee, Bell died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center on 12 January, according to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.
What happened on the night of the shooting
Bell had attended a gymnastics event at the Nashville fairgrounds with two friends before the group got onto the interstate in his white Nissan Sentra to return to campus. Bell was shot inside the vehicle after the other passengers observed a dark-coloured sedan pull up alongside them. The investigation, led by Detective Joshua Belk, concluded that "the motive for the gunfire was jealousy," MNPD said.
Jealousy over a girlfriend
Police established through extensive mobile phone data analysis that Carter and Coleman had also been at the fairgrounds that same evening. "Carter's girlfriend was a member of the gymnastics team," MNPD said in the press release. "It has been reported that he did not like other young men talking to her." The pair had allegedly targeted Bell and his two teammates "with the intent of scaring the basketball team to stay away from the girlfriend," MNPD said.
Charges and bond
Carter is facing a grand jury indictment on charges of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, and three counts of using a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony. A Criminal Court judge set his bond at $250,000. Coleman, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, faces the same charges in Davidson County Juvenile Court and is being held pending a detention hearing.
Family responds to arrests
Bell's family welcomed the arrests in a statement reported by News Channel 5. "We are relieved to learn that Metro Police have captured the suspects believed to be responsible for taking Andre from us," the family said. "While this development brings a measure of comfort, it does not erase the pain, shock, and heartbreak our family continues to carry."
