Netflix cancels 'The Boroughs' after one season despite strong start
The Duffer Brothers-backed sci-fi series won't return for Season 2
Netflix has canceled The Boroughs after just one season, ending the Duffer Brothers-backed sci-fi drama despite a solid audience response and plans for a multi-season storyline.
The series, which premiered in May 2026 following the conclusion of Stranger Things, starred Alfred Molina and Alfre Woodard as residents of a retirement community forced to confront a mysterious supernatural threat. Variety reported the cancellation comes even though the show's creative team had already begun developing a second season.
The Boroughs Was Designed as a Multi-Season Story
Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, The Boroughs followed a group of older residents who band together to stop an otherworldly force from stealing the one thing they have little of left — time.
The series earned attention for its unique premise and was frequently described as a retirement-community version of Stranger Things. Alongside Molina and Woodard, the ensemble cast included Denis O'Hare, Clarke Peters, Carlos Miranda, Jena Malone, Seth Numrich, Alice Kremelberg and Geena Davis.
According to reports, the writers envisioned the series as a three-season arc, and a writers' room for Season 2 had already been assembled while Netflix weighed a renewal decision.
Alfred Molina Had Hoped for More Seasons
Before the cancellation was announced, Alfred Molina expressed enthusiasm about continuing the story.
"I would love to carry this on. I would love for this to be ongoing," Molina said in a May interview. "Who knows? TV can be fickle, but it can also give you incredible opportunities. We've got a wonderful cast. We've got a great premise. The sets are all there. I'd love to do more."
His comments reflected optimism among the cast and creative team that the show could continue beyond its debut season.
Strong Viewership Wasn't Enough to Secure Renewal
Despite attracting viewers, The Boroughs ultimately failed to secure a second season.
The series reportedly generated nearly 19 million views during its first 18 days on Netflix, a respectable performance for a new original title. However, industry observers note that viewership is only one factor in renewal decisions.
The show's science-fiction premise required extensive visual effects and production resources, resulting in higher costs than many other first-season series. Production expenses can play a significant role when streaming platforms evaluate a show's long-term viability.
Netflix Continues Expanding the Stranger Things Universe
While The Boroughs will not continue, Netflix remains committed to projects connected to the Duffer Brothers and the broader Stranger Things brand.
The streaming platform recently renewed animated spinoff Stranger Things: Tales From '85 for a second season. Netflix has also handed renewals to several newer series, including Little House on the Prairie, The Hunting Wives and Leanne.
For fans of The Boroughs, however, the cancellation means the planned three-season story will end after a single chapter, leaving many of its larger mysteries unresolved.
