Daniel Radcliffe joined the voice cast of Netflix's upcoming animated fairy tale movie Steps, in which he will portray an unconventional prince. The production reframes the classic Cinderella story by focusing on the lives of her misunderstood stepsisters rather than the traditional heroine.

Netflix announced the casting update, which places the actor alongside a star-studded ensemble. The plot follows Lilith, voiced by Ali Wong, who is blamed for disrupting the Royal Ball after stealing a magic wand. During the ensuing chaos, Lilith accidentally transforms her sister Margot, voiced by Stephanie Hsu, into a frog. To reverse the spell, Lilith teams up with Cinderella, voiced by Amanda Seyfried, and an unlikely troll companion on an adventurous quest to save the kingdom. The animated movie Steps also stars Peter Dinklage as Roderick, Young Mazino as Gef, and Bette Midler as the Fairy Godmother.

Co-director John Ripa praised Radcliffe's performance, noting that the actor brought a highly distinct style of warmth and humour to the role. Ripa explained that the production team wanted their fairytale prince to be unlike any character audiences had seen before, adding that Radcliffe made this dream a reality. The filmmaker remarked that they were blown away by the actor's range and sharp comedic timing, which helped create a delightful and irresistible character.

Co-director Alyce Tzue explained that the core narrative focuses on two highly contrasting sisters who eventually discover they share deep similarities. Tzue revealed that the personal story was inspired by her own childhood experiences of feeling like an outsider who did not belong. She explained that her goal was to create a film for anyone who has ever felt excluded, demonstrating how a single act of kindness can change everything. The animated movie Steps is scheduled to premiere on the streaming platform later this year.
