'Today' show intruder faces charges after targeting hosts in studio
Police charged a Today show intruder with hate crimes after he breached security at the NBC studios
A Today show intruder faced multiple hate crime charges after bypassing security at the NBC studios in New York City, lunging at Today Show co-host Craig Melvin, and shouting racial slurs on Thursday. Andrew Truelove allegedly entered an unauthorised area near Studio 1A at 30 Rockefeller Centre at approximately 8:57 am whilst searching for co-host Al Roker. Truelove encountered Melvin on a staircase inside the building, where he shouted the slurs and lunged at him before being detained by security officers.
TMZ first reported the security breach, which was later confirmed by Page Six and The New York Post. The New York Police Department confirmed that Truelove was booked on charges of hate crime menacing, hate crime burglary, hate crime criminal trespass, and harassment. Authorities confirmed that a uniformed officer assigned to the building quickly placed the suspect in custody without further incident, and no injuries were reported.
The suspect, wearing a backpack, successfully eluded studio security and accessed a vestibule area while searching for Today Show co-host Al Roker. Upon failing to locate Roker, Truelove climbed a staircase toward the filming studio and confronted Melvin, demanding to know Roker's whereabouts. Truelove then hurled racial slurs and lunged at the presenter, who immediately alerted security personnel to intervene and remove the trespasser.
Both Melvin and Roker appeared on the broadcast later that morning but did not address the incident on the air. Representatives for the programme stated that they are cooperating fully with law enforcement as the investigation continues. Melvin later posted a reassuring message on social media, stating that he was doing fine and looked forward to returning to the broadcast the following morning.
An unnamed source revealed that the production staff was already on edge following the disappearance of co-host Savannah Guthrie's mother, Nancy Guthrie, earlier this year. The source described the security breach as highly alarming, noting that the Today Show intruder could have carried a weapon. This latest incident has prompted heightened concerns regarding safety protocols at the major broadcasting facility.
