Forensic scientists rule Texas septic well death a homicide
Gonzalez-Rangel died from multiple blunt force injuries after a 30-foot fall
The death of a 47-year-old man who fell into an underground septic well in Southeast Texas following a suspected altercation with a colleague has been officially ruled a homicide. Lorenzo Gonzalez-Rangel died from multiple blunt force injuries after plunging 30 feet down the shaft at a local construction site on Monday. The Harris County Sheriff's Office believes the victim was engaged in a physical fight with his co-worker when the fatal plunge occurred.
KTRK reported that emergency services were originally called to the active construction site on Sheldon Ridge Way in Harris County at approximately 7:40 am. Deputies arriving at the scene discovered that Gonzalez-Rangel had fallen deep into the underground well system, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The local fire department later recovered his body from the 30-foot shaft.
Following the initial recovery, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed that homicide detectives detained the co-worker and several other individuals present at the construction site for questioning. Investigators noted that the victim might have been pushed during the altercation. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences subsequently conducted an autopsy, officially ruling that the multiple blunt force injuries sustained during the incident constituted a homicide.
The sheriff's office announced on X that the initial findings of the investigation have been thoroughly reviewed alongside the Harris County District Attorney's Office. Law enforcement officials confirmed that the active investigation will be formally presented to a Harris County Grand Jury for further review. Although several individuals were detained for questioning at the scene, authorities have not yet made any formal arrests in connection with the fatal incident.
