'Today' security breach ends with arrest after Craig Melvin targeted

Craig Melvin was confronted by an alleged intruder at NBC's Today studios on Thursday after a man reportedly breached security, shouted a racial slur at the co-anchor and lunged toward him before being arrested by New York police.

Police arrest alleged intruder at Rockefeller Center

The New York Police Department said officers responded at about 9 a.m. to reports of a "disorderly person" at 30 Rockefeller Center, home to NBC's Today show. The unidentified individual was taken into custody, and no injuries were reported.

NBC confirmed that the incident involved a person entering an unauthorised area before approaching Melvin, who immediately alerted security.

Melvin says he is 'doing just fine'

According to TMZ, the man had been looking for longtime weatherman Al Roker before allegedly turning his attention to Melvin when he could not find him. The outlet reported that the suspect lunged at Melvin while shouting a racial slur.

Later on Thursday, Melvin reassured viewers in an Instagram statement that he was "doing just fine" and thanked supporters for their messages. He also confirmed he would return to the Today desk on Friday morning.

NBC reviewing security measures

NBC said it is cooperating fully with law enforcement as the investigation continues and is reviewing its security procedures following the incident.

"NBC and 'Today' take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff and guests extremely seriously," the network said, adding that it remains "committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios."

Incident follows heightened security at 'Today'

The confrontation comes months after Today reportedly increased security around its Rockefeller Center studios following the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, earlier this year.

Nancy Guthrie, 84, disappeared from her Arizona home on Feb. 1, and authorities continue to investigate the case as a suspected kidnapping.

Savannah Guthrie, who appeared on Thursday's broadcast, also announced she will be away from the programme for the next few weeks while filming NBC's upcoming Wordle game show, which is expected to premiere next year.
