Rebecca Romijn recalls biggest worry before 'Avengers: Doomsday' return

Rebecca Romijn has opened up about the one question she immediately asked after being invited to reprise her iconic role as Mystique in Avengers: Doomsday.

The 53-year-old actress admitted she was thrilled by the unexpected call to return as the blue-skinned mutant but couldn't help thinking about the lengthy transformation process that defined her original performances in the X-Men films.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at San Diego Comic-Con, Romijn described the experience as "overwhelming" and "very surreal."

"It was a surprising call to get," she said. "Of course, my first question was about the makeup process. 'What are we going to do about that?' It was very long in the original."

Romijn portrayed Mystique in the original X-Men trilogy between 2000 and 2006, with each transformation into the shape-shifting mutant requiring up to nine hours of prosthetics and body paint.

She also made a cameo in X-Men: First Class, while Jennifer Lawrence later portrayed a younger version of the character in the prequel films.

The actress praised Marvel Studios for making the process smoother this time around and said returning alongside both familiar and new cast members made the experience especially memorable.

"It was so fun to go back with my old cast and be with the new cast, and it's all been very surreal," she said.

Romijn had previously expressed interest in revisiting the role, telling ComicBook in 2022 that she would "absolutely" return if given the opportunity, while fondly recalling her time working on the beloved superhero franchise.

Avengers: Doomsday will see heroes from multiple Marvel universes unite against Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom and is set to hit cinemas later this year.
