Taika Waititi remembers Sam Neill's calming presence after his death

Taika Waititi has shared an emotional tribute to his late friend and longtime collaborator Sam Neill, revealing that he views death "in a very different way to other people."

The filmmaker reflected on Neill's passing while attending a special event in London on July 30 celebrating the 10th anniversary of Hunt for the Wilderpeople, the acclaimed 2016 film that Waititi wrote, directed and produced.

The pair developed a close friendship after working together on the movie.

Looking back on their final reunion, Waititi recalled spending time with Neill during anniversary screenings in New Zealand earlier this year.

"We had a great time with Sam," he said, adding that they had remained in touch after the event.

"I've had a lot of good times with him, and there's no regrets on my part."

Neill died on July 13 at the age of 78 after battling pneumonia. While acknowledging the sadness of losing his friend, Waititi said he believes death is not the end.

"It's sad that I don't get to chat with my friend or hang out, but I'll see him in a bit," he said. "I don't feel like any of this is the end of things."

The Oscar-winning director also remembered Neill's calm presence on the set of Hunt for the Wilderpeople, saying the veteran actor never let the pressures of filmmaking affect him.

While everyone else worried about schedules and fading daylight, Waititi said Neill always remained relaxed, bringing perspective through decades of experience on major films including Jurassic Park, The Piano, Event Horizon and Omen III.

"He put things in perspective," Waititi said, describing Neill's steady attitude as a reassuring influence throughout production.

Neill had previously spoken warmly about Waititi as well, revealing he admired the filmmaker's originality long before they worked together and was excited to be part of one of his projects.
