OpenAI announced that Sam Altman is rejoining the company as CEO, accompanied by a newly formed board.

This development announced on Wednesday followed Altman's unexpected departure last Friday, and within a short span by Sunday evening, he had transitioned to Microsoft to contribute to a new team dedicated to artificial intelligence research.

Over 500 OpenAI staff members conveyed a letter to the board, expressing their intention to resign and join the new Microsoft group unless Altman, President, Chairman, and co-founder Greg Brockman were reinstated, and a fresh board was established earlier in this week..

Taking to X(former Twitter), the artificial intelligence research organization Open AI shared the news of an agreement between Sam Altman and the company.

The post read, “We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam Altman to return to OpenAI as CEO with a new initial board… We are collaborating to figure out the details. Thank you so much for your patience through this.”

Soon after this announcement, Altman took to his X and informed about his decision.

He wrote, “i love openai, and everything i’ve done over the past few days has been in service of keeping this team and its mission together. when i decided to join msft on sun evening, it was clear that was the best path for me and the team.”

Altman continued, “with the new board and w satya’s support, i’m looking forward to returning to openai, and building on our strong partnership with msft.”

Brokman also wrote, “Returning to OpenAI & getting back to coding tonight.”

Upon the late Sunday announcement of Altman's transition to Microsoft, CEO Satya Nadella affirmed Microsoft's ongoing commitment to OpenAI, in which it holds a 49% stake.

Nadella commended the transformations occurring at OpenAI, stating, “ “We believe this is a first essential step on a path to more stable, well-informed, and effective governance.”
