Billy Joel makes huge comeback with 'Turn the Lights Back On'
Billy Joel released his new song, 'Turn the Lights Back On' on February 1, 2024
Billy Joel made his official musical comeback on February 1, 2024, Thursday morning with his newly released song, Turn the Lights Back On.
He launched his new lyrical single after almost 20 years since he last recorded music. This wistful and powerful piano ballad feels like the Piano Man singer never left the stage and is a continuation of the six decade long conversation between his fans and him.
“Nothing is different, we’ve been here before/ Pacing these halls, trying to talk/ Over the silence,” the song’s lyrics state as the artist depicts a conversation that he is resuming with his fans.
Spreading the message of self-acceptance, Joel further sings, “And pride sticks out its tongue/ Laughs at the portrait/ That we’ve become/ Stuck in a frame, unable to change.”
Turn the Lights Back On was produced by the Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer, Freddy Wexler and was written by Joel, Wexler, Arthur Bacon and Wayne Hector.

Joel was announced as one of the performers at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards and will perform this song live for the first time on February 4, 2024, Sunday, at the upcoming ceremony, as reported by Billboard.
This song is the 74-year-old artist’s first effort in the genre of pop with lyrics since the release of his Sinatra-inspired ballad, All My Life, released back in 2007.
All My Life ranked number one on the Billboard Hot Singles Sales chart which was followed closely by the release of another new song, Christmas in Fallujah.
Joel, who holds 33 top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 to his name, teased his now-released song, Turn the Lights back on during a December 19, 2023 show amid his historic Madison Square Garden residency.
“I have good news. I have bad news. I’ll give you the bad news first. We don’t have anything new to play for you. The good news is you don’t have to sit through something you have no idea what it is. Although we’ve got a little something we’ve been working on you might hear some time,” he told the crowd as he announced the exciting news.
