Alicia Keys addressed her rise to fame back when she was just a teenager and how she was under the spotlight before she was actually ready.
In the latest digital cover of PEOPLE magazine, the singer recalled the release of her hit album, Songs in a Minor, which introduced the music industry to number one songs like Fallin’.
The musical project earned the 16-time Grammy winner her first five Grammy awards including a gramophone from the category of best new artist.
But the now 44-year-old icon revealed to the outlet how she found the world of entertainment a difficult place to navigate, especially since she suffered with constant breakouts of acne.

Addressing her early fame, she said, “I always felt like on top of being a young girl just entering into the music business, exploring, being on television and performing under hot lights and sweating and just [being] in a whole new universe—it was like an alien universe.”
“I didn’t feel like myself. I felt like I had to conform to everybody’s expectation of what they thought I was or should be,” she further stated.
For context, Alicia Keys began composing songs and music at the age of 12 and was signed by Columbia Records at 15, which led to her teen fame as a musical star.
