Simple tips to spot 'real' Banarsi Silk saree

Banarasi silk sarees are renowned for their rich craftsmanship and timeless elegance, but with the rise of counterfeits, it's essential to know how to distinguish a genuine saree.

Experts have shared essential tips to help you spot an authentic Banarasi silk saree amidst the growing number of imitations.

Fashion expert Nishit Gupta, Director at KALKI, advises that the back of the saree is a crucial indicator.

Moreover, the genuine Banarasi sarees are handwoven with visible floating threads, a sign of meticulous handwork. 

Machine-made sarees, by contrast, will have a smoother back. Additionally, check for the GI (Geographical Indication) tag, which guarantees authenticity and origin from Varanasi, India.

The weight of the saree is another key factor. Pure Banarasi silk is slightly heavier due to rich silk threads and real zari work. If the saree feels too light, it's likely not authentic.

Experts also recommend the “ring test.” Pure silk should pass through a small ring effortlessly.

Furthermore, authentic Banarasi sarees use real gold or silver zari, which can be tested by rubbing the threads or using a magnet.

However, always verify the seller's authenticity and be cautious of prices that seem too good to be true.
