In a shocking turn of events, a plane with a total of 10 people on board went missing in Alaska.

The Bering Air Caravan flight, which was on its way to Nome from Unalaklee, was declared overdue at approximately four pm, local time, on Thursday, February 6, reported by the Alaska Department of Public Safety (DPS).

According to the report, there were 9 passengers and one pilot on the plane. Bering Air Director of Operations, David Olson, commented on the tragic incident saying that the plane had departed from Unalakleet at 2:37 pm, as stated by local outlet KTUU.

In a Facebook post, a Fire Department volunteer from Nome explained, "We are currently responding to a report of a missing Bering Air caravan."

"We are currently doing an active ground search from Nome and from White Mountain and have as much up to date information on the event as possible," the volunteer continued.

Blaming it on the weather, the department also issued a statement, saying, "Due to weather and visibility, we are limited on air search at the current time. National Guard and Coast Guard and Troopers have been notified and are active in the search. Norton Sound Health Corporation is standing by."

Authorities requested the public to remain calm during this stressful time and urged them to be mindful of those who are missing, while advising against forming independent search parties due to the dangerous weather conditions and safety concerns.

The fire department announced that a C-130 aircraft has reached the Nome area. It won’t be landing but will scan the area, using advanced equipment to spot objects and people, even poor visibility conditions.
