X cyberattack: Hacker group ‘Dark Storm Team’ claims responsibility

Shortly after Elon Musk confirmed that the X (formerly Twitter) outage on Monday (March 10) was the result of a large-scale cyberattack, a hacker group known as "Dark Storm Team" claimed responsibility for the attack.

The attack resulted in a series of outages, disrupting access for thousands of X users globally, especially those in the US and the UK.

Founded in 2023, the hacker group  has been linked to cyber warfare tactics targeting high-security systems.

In a post on Telegram, the Dark Storm Team stated, "We took Twitter offline" and shared a screenshot of a real-time connectivity status page displaying failed connection attempts worldwide.

Notably, according to a cybersecurity firm Orange Cyberdefense’s report Dark Storm Team operates with a pro-Palestinian agenda and has threatened cyberattacks against Israel, NATO countries, and other countries supporting Israel.

Earlier, Musk confirmed the outages were the result of a significant cyberattack, stating, "There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X. We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved."

Moreover, in his interview with Fox Business Network's Larry Kudlow, Musk suggested that the attack might have originated from Ukraine, citing IP addresses from the region.

That said, the cyberattack attack is believed to have been a Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack, which overwhelms a platform's servers with excessive traffic, causing slowdowns or complete outages.

As per the Downdetector, nearly 40,000 X users experienced disruptions at the peak of the outage.
