Google has introduced a significant update to Gmail's search feature, utilising artificial intelligence (AI) to deliver more relevant results.

This new functionality will use AI to consider factors such as recency, frequently accessed emails, and common contacts to surface emails based on the user's search query.

The launch of this enhanced search functionality is part of Google's efforts to strengthen its email services and compete with Apple's Mail app, which introduced several Gmail-like features with the release of iOS 18 last year.

“With this update, the emails you’re looking for are far more likely to be at the top of your search results — saving you valuable time and helping you find important information more easily,” the company blog post reads.

Unlike the previous chronological ordering of search results, this update aims to save users time and effort in finding important information.

The Alphabet-owned company has also introduced a toggle, allowing users to switch between "Most relevant" and "Most recent" emails on the search results page.

This update is currently rolling out globally for users with personal Google accounts and is accessible on the web and through the Gmail app for Android and iOS.

Google is also planning to extend this feature to business users shortly.

Moreover, recently, Gmail included the integration of Gemini-powered features, such as adding events to Google Calendar directly from an email, and the introduction of "summary cards" that enable users to take actions in their inbox.
