X rival Bluesky introduces blue check verification feature
The social media platform Bluesky has introduced a blue check verification feature, similar to the rival X (formerly Twitter).
This new feature will verify the legitimacy of notable accounts, making it easier for Bluesky users to trust the authenticity of posts.
The blue check verification feature is a response to user feedback, with the platform acknowledging that a larger visual signal would be useful in identifying authentic accounts.
During the initial phase, Bluesky will collaborate with select "Trusted Verifiers," independent organisations that can verify accounts as members of their team.
For instance, a company can verify its public relations team members with blue checks, indicating they are trusted sources of company news.
Notably, the platform’s moderation team will verify each new verification to ensure authenticity. Bluesky already had a form of verification, allowing users to link their domain to their username.
According to the company, this feature has been used by 270,000 accounts, linking their Bluesky username to a website.
The blue check feature is designed to help cut down on disinformation from impersonators, particularly for public figures such as celebrities, journalists, and politicians.
Additionally, the platform plans to launch a request form for verification in the coming months, but for now, it's not accepting applications.
