OpenAI in trouble: Popular digital media publisher sues over copyright breach

In a surprising development, a renowned digital media publisher Ziff Davis has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in a Delaware federal court, alleging copyright infringement.

This lawsuit is part of a larger trend of high-stakes copyright cases brought by news outlets, authors, and visual artists against OpenAI and other tech companies.

The company has claimed that Sam Altman-led AI startup used its publications to train the AI model behind ChatGPT without permission.

Davis has argued that OpenAI "intentionally and relentlessly" exploited its copyrighted content for its AI systems.

The lawsuit also stated that OpenAI assumes the federal courts will not be able to effectively address content owners' concerns before it's too late.

Previous cases have alleged that AI systems were trained on thousands of copyrighted works without permission.

For the unversed, Davis' publications include ZDNet, PCMag, CNET, IGN, and Lifehacker.

Notably, other news publishers, including The New York Times and Dow Jones, have also sued AI companies for copyright infringement.

Meanwhile, OpenAI has responded, stating that its AI models are trained on publicly available data and are grounded in fair use, empowering innovation.

The startup has argued that its AI systems make fair use of copyrighted material by studying it to create new content.
