Queen Elizabeth’s life on stage: Writer behind new play takes swipe at ‘The Crown’
New play based on Queen Elizabeth’s life now playing in the UK

Queen Elizabeth’s life has been dramatised once again, however, this time an English screenwriter has brought the story to the stage.
By Royal Appointment, written by Daisy Goodwin, is now touring the UK and tells the late Queen’s story through the backdrop of her sartorial choices.
While discussing her latest work, the creator behind popular British TV series Victoria, took a slight jab at another well known royal series, The Crown.
“My version of the Queen is going to be different from The Crown’s because I’m coming at it from the idea of her as a woman, whereas Peter Morgan is writing about her as a monarch,” she explained, referencing the Netflix show’s creator.
She further claimed that the Queen was a very projectionable personality because she was “so poker faced that you never really knew what she was thinking.”
“And one of the things I explore in the play is the idea that, actually, her clothes were her way of signalling her true thoughts,” she added.
Notably, The Crown spawned considerably successful six seasons, while also winning multiple silverware throughout its lengthy run, including the prestigious Emmy Awards.
Charting the rise of Queen Elizabeth’s rule from its debut season in 2016, the show’s last season premiered in two volumes, which were streamed by Netflix in 2023’s November and December.
Meanwhile, Daisy Goodwin’s By Royal Appointment concluded its run at the Richmond Theatre in London on July 26, though it is also scheduled to make other stops around the country.
