US-China tech war heats up as China proposes global AI alliance
In a remarkable breakthrough, China has unveiled plans to establish a new international organisation focused on artificial intelligence (AI) cooperation, positioning itself as a leader in shaping global AI governance.
According to Reuters, the proposal was announced by Chinese Premier Li Qiang during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference held in Shanghai, signaling Beijing’s intent to offer an alternative to US-led initiatives in the rapidly evolving tech sector.
While Premier Li did not directly mention the United States, his comments appeared to respond to recent moves from Washington.
Earlier, the Trump administration introduced an AI blueprint designed to boost American AI exports and strengthen ties with allied nations, part of a broader strategy to counter China’s growing technological influence.
Li warned that AI development should not become the "exclusive game" of a few powerful countries or corporations.
He stressed that AI should be accessible to all, advocating for equal rights among nations and companies to use and develop the technology.
He said that China is prepared to share its AI products and research, particularly with countries in the Global South, which includes many developing and emerging economies.
The Chinese premier also called for greater global collaboration to address mounting AI-related risks.
He highlighted the fragmented nature of current international AI regulations and urged the formation of a governance framework based on broad consensus.
