5 interesting things about Elon Musk’s Tesla Robotaxis you didn’t know

Tesla has long been at the centre of the electric vehicle (EV) revolution, but in October 2024, Elon Musk took things a step further by unveiling the company’s much-hyped Robotaxis.

Positioned alongside rivals like Waymo and Zoox, Tesla’s autonomous vehicles promise to redefine urban mobility with a futuristic design, bold technology, and affordability at their core.

Here are five surprising facts about Tesla’s Robotaxis you may not have heard.

Fully autonomous with no human input

Unlike most vehicles on the road, Tesla’s Robotaxis are built for Level 5 autonomy. That means the cars can handle every driving task without any human input, relying entirely on Tesla’s cutting-edge software and neural networks.

No steering wheels or pedals

In a radical shift from traditional design, these Robotaxis don’t include steering wheels or pedals. Passengers simply sit back and let the car do the work.

It’s the ultimate step toward a future where driving as we know it becomes obsolete.

Designed to eliminate driving stress

Whether stuck in traffic or commuting across town, Tesla envisions the Robotaxi as a way to take the stress out of driving.

Passengers can nap, work, or watch entertainment while the car navigates the journey, making it particularly appealing for city dwellers.

Affordable alternative to car ownership

Musk emphasised affordability as a core goal. Tesla claims the Robotaxi could eventually cost as little as 20 cents per mile to operate, a fraction of the average 72 cents per mile it takes to run a privately owned car in the US.

This opens the door to mobility for people who might not otherwise afford a vehicle.

Safer than human drivers

Tesla estimates its Robotaxis will be up to 10 times safer than human-controlled cars, thanks to their constant learning and AI-powered decision-making.
