Johnny Depp has opened up about the emotional period when his daughter, Lily-Rose Depp, suffered a serious illness during the filming of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and how director Tim Burton favoured him.

In the new docu-series Tim Burton: Life in the Line, the 62-year-old actor recalled that his daughter Lilly Rose Depp was seven years old at the time when she was hospitalized with kidney failure after contracting E. coli.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star said he was ready to quit the movie until Burton intervened.

“I told Tim, ‘I can’t work until my baby’s better,’” Depp shared. “And he said, ‘Don’t even talk like that. Whatever we have to do, we’ll do. She’s going to be fine.”

The A Nightmare on Elm Street actor revealed that Burton paused production for several weeks while he stayed at the hospital with Lily-Rose and her mother, Vanessa Paradis.

“Tim came by the next day with flowers, like the great uncle and godfather he is,” he added.

The actor-director pair started working together on Edward Scissorhands, and their bonding grew even stronger after this moment.

Tim Burton: Life in the Line is now available for streaming.
