Margot Robbie: Born to be the female ‘American Psycho’?
The 'Barbie' star is now rumored to play the lead in Luca Guadagnino’s gender-swapped ‘American Psycho’
Margot Robbie has the perfect traits to portray a gender-swap American Psycho, and here’s why.
Reports are also favoring the Babylon star, suggesting she’s being considered to lead as the female version of Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming classic.
According to rumors, Guadagnino’s reimagining of the cult classic might flip the script by casting Robbie as a modern, female Bateman, a wealthy Manhattan executive with chillingly psychotic traits.
A source told The Sun, "A remake of American Psycho is in the works and Margot is in the frame to play a female version of Patrick Bateman."
“Brett’s novel and the film were so controversial and the people working on the remake wanted to twist the narrative by having a female actress take on the lead of Bateman."
“There was a huge backlash about misogyny when the novel came out back in the Nineties," the inisder continued.
Adding,"And by having a female killer, it puts a different spin on the crimes. Margot’s career is on fire at the moment. Taking on a role this gritty will really show what a sensational actress she is."
So what makes Margot Robbie perfect to take on such a intricate role?
The perfect psychotic instincts
No other female star has a better psychotic appeal than the Australian actress.
She loves to play roles that demand unpredictability and madness.
Robbie portrayed Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey, roles that required psychotic and reckless characteristics, which she effortlessly delivered.
Her mad and magnetic roles
This is not the first time she has played a psychopathic character. She also gave glimpses of it in some of her other roles, like Nellie LaRoy from Babylon, where she was infatuated with fame and would do anything to satisfy her hunger for it.
Her character reflected wild energy and was self-aware of her own mythology.
A glimpse into her inner Bateman
Let’s revisit her American Psycho spoof from 2016, produced by Vogue, named Australian Psycho. Where she impersonates Patrick Bateman's morning routine in a psychopathic way, like Christian Bale did in the original.
Beauty, precision, and control
What makes her fit isn’t her beauty or chaos, it’s her precision.
Robbie has a talent for emotional mimicry; she studies how people want to be seen and weaponizes it on screen.
Imagine that instinct turned inward, a female Bateman who kills not for dominance, but for control over perception.
The rise of a feminine fury
Moreover, it would be interesting to see if Guadagnino actually makes a gender-swapped American Psycho and casts the Wuthering Heights actress as the female Bateman, she will definitely come face to face with all the anti-feminist and misogynists who comes in her way, as a sign of dominance.
