Keanu Reeves’ ‘Good Fortune’ outperforms ‘The Smashing Machine’ despite box office drop
Keanu Reeves’ 'Good Fortune' was released on October 17
Good Fortune has turned out to be one of the most disappointing films in Keanu Reeves’ career.
Despite boasting a strong cast and decent critical reception, the supernatural comedy has failed to connect with audiences as reflected in its poor box office performance.
Directed by and starring Aziz Ansari, alongside Reeves, Seth Rogen and Keke Palmer as the film has earned only about $16.4 million worldwide.
Its domestic debut on October 17 in around 3,000 theaters brought in just $6.1 million during its opening weekend, setting a weak tone for its run.
Since then, the film has surpassed the $1 million daily mark only four times, three of which came during its first weekend.
Eighteen days after release, Good Fortune continues to struggle. Its latest weekend gross barely crossed $1 million, a 53% drop from the previous weekend’s $3.1 million.
It has also lost 840 theaters in the U.S., pushing its per-theater average down to just $91 on Monday, when it made under $200,000 despite still screening in over 2,000 venues, according to Box Office Mojo.
While it has slightly edged past Dwayne Johnson’s The Smashing Machine ($11.3 million), it trails behind The Strangers: Chapter 2 ($15 million).
With a production budget of $30 million and a break-even target of around $75 million, Good Fortune now appears destined to finish as a significant commercial flop for both Keanu Reeves and Aziz Ansari.
