OpenAI is expanding its safety efforts by investing in a new biotech startup focused on preventing advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models from being misused to design harmful biological agents.

The move marks one of OpenAI’s strongest commitments yet to strengthening global defences against AI-driven bio risks.

According to Reuters, the biotech startup named Red Queen Bio has raised $15 million in seed funding, with OpenAI serving as the lead investor.

The company aims to develop systems that can detect, monitor, and block attempts to create dangerous pathogens using AI tool.

Co-founder Hannu Rajaniemi noted the goal is to ensure defensive technology grows as fast as the capabilities that could be exploited by bad actors.

The investment builds on OpenAI’s push to support early-stage firms working specifically on AI-related safety challenges.

Last month, OpenAI backed Valthos, another US-based biosecurity company developing protective software for labs and researchers.

That said, experts have warned that as AI accelerates progress in fields like drug development, it could also lower barriers to creating harmful biological materials, increasing the need for better safeguards.

By backing this new biotech startup, OpenAI aims to strengthen global resilience and ensure that defensive innovation keeps pace with rapidly advancing AI systems.
