Pressure mounts on Andrew as councils erase his street names
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor continues to face setback
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s public image is in shambles. It has collapsed so much so that even street names once meant to honour him are quickly becoming undesirable.
Roads, lanes, crescents, terraces and even quiet residential areas carrying the 65-year-old former Royal’s names, are all being renamed, as authorities move to erase his name, a move widely applauded by the community.
In Northern Ireland’s town of Carrickfergus, a street titled Andrew Way was created to commemorate his 1986 marriage to Sarah Ferguson.
The council of Mid and East Antrim has now approved changing the street name, with one member describing the move as "sad but necessary," as per The Guardian.
In Maidenhead, Berkshire, the situation is rather complicated by a Prince Andrew Road sitting next to Prince Andrew Close.
Last Week, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead made the process for renaming streets a little simpler.
Previously, street name changes required all residents’ agreement and approval. But now, due to the new rules, it needs only two-thirds of residents’ support.
The motion was officially passed with 21 councillors in favour, four against and two abstaining.
The new rule was met with support by local residents. Aman Gandhi, who lives on Prince Andrew Road expressed his desire for the road to be renamed quickly.
Speaking to BBC, Aman shared, "It's been a little bit awkward when we talk to people and drop our road name… It's not a name that you want attributed to where you're living."
Continuing, "From my perspective, the sooner [the renaming] comes, the better."
