A 19-year-old woman has died after falling from a long-abandoned building made famous by Netflix’s Stranger Things, prompting an investigation by university police.

According to Channel 2 Action News, Leah Palmirotto was exploring the five-storey property with friends when she fell, police. Officers said the group had entered the derelict site, which sits on land owned by a university.

Emergency crews were called to the scene, but Ms Palmirotto died there. DeKalb County police confirmed the victim was a woman in her late teens to early twenties who fell from the upper floors of the building.

The site was once the Georgia Mental Health Institute and has stood empty for years. More recently, it gained cult status after being used as Hawkins Lab in the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, drawing curious visitors and urban explorers.

Investigators have not said how many people were with Ms Palmirotto at the time of the fall.

One parent told the outlet that her son called her in distress and admitted his group regularly explored abandoned buildings.

Authorities have yet to release further details about how the fall occurred.
