Sabrina Carpenter joins 'The Muppet Show' for Its 50th anniversary special
Sabrina Carpenter brings star power to the Muppets’ 50th-anniversary Disney+ return
The beloved Muppet Show is making a 50th anniversary comeback with pop superstar Sabrina Carpenter set to appear as a special guest.
Disney revealed that Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and the rest of the gang will return for a one off special, more than four decades after the original series ended.
A teaser clip shows Kermit’s green arm turning on the lights of an old studio before placing down a mug with his name on it.
For the unversed, the show originally ran from 1976 to 1981, captivating a generation of kids who sang along to the theme tune, “It’s time to play the music. It’s time to light the lights.”
Its popularity attracted A-list guests such as Sir Elton John, Johnny Cash, Diana Ross, John Cleese, and Debbie Harry.
Broadcast in more than 100 countries, the series earned high praise, with Time magazine in 1978 calling it “the most popular television entertainment now being produced on Earth.”
The show also won numerous awards, including Emmys, Grammys and BAFTAs.
Though the main series ended, the Muppets continued to appear in spin offs.
Muppets Tonight aired from 1996 to 1998, followed by shorter projects including a 2015 mockumentary series, the Muppets Now short form series in 2020 and The Muppets Mayhem musical comedy series in 2023.
Now, more than 40 years later, the Muppets are back to delight audiences once again, combining nostalgia with fresh comedy and music for both longtime fans and a new generation.
The special will stream on Disney+ starting February 4, promising fans “music, comedy and a whole lot of chaos” from the original Muppet Theatre.
