Microsoft appears to be preparing measures that could interfere with Atlas downloads on Windows, similar to how Edge currently handles Chrome downloads.

Clues have surfaced in Edge Canary, the experimental version of the browser, where three new internal flags related to Atlas were recently discovered.

These flags closely resemble tools already used by Edge when users attempt to download Chrome.

Currently, when someone searches for Chrome on Bing while using Edge, Microsoft often displays banners promoting Edge instead.

Users visiting Chrome’s download page may also see pop-ups urging them to stay with Microsoft’s browser.

The newly identified Atlas-related flags suggest a similar approach. One appears designed to detect searches for the ChatGPT Atlas browser on Bing, potentially triggering promotional messages.

Another seems linked to activating prompts or warnings on Atlas’s download page. A third indicates Microsoft is testing different messages or designs to see which is most effective at discouraging downloads.

The timing is notable. ChatGPT Atlas, developed by OpenAI, is still in development for Windows and is currently limited to macOS.

Microsoft’s early preparations suggest it views Atlas as a possible competitive threat, especially as AI-powered browsers begin to emerge as a new category.
