Kanye West has pushed back against claims that his recent apology over antisemitic remarks was a strategic move tied to his upcoming album release.

In an interview with Vanity Fair published on Tuesday, Jan. 27, the rapper denied that a full-page apology ad in The Wall Street Journal was intended to revive his public image ahead of his next album, Bully.

“This isn’t about reviving my commerciality,” West, 48, said, pointing to his continued streaming success and insisting the letter stemmed from personal remorse rather than promotion.

West explained that the apology came after reflecting on what he described as the “wreckage” of his past behavior, adding that his comments had gone too far and hurt both Jewish and Black communities.

“I look at the wreckage of my episode and realize that this isn’t who I am,” he said, adding that he wanted people to understand the values he now stood for.

The rapper also maintained that his album rollout played no role in the decision, noting that Bully had already drawn significant anticipation ahead of its release.

West’s apology followed years of controversy, including antisemitic remarks that led to major professional fallout and legal disputes, as well as a public acknowledgment that bipolar disorder had contributed to his behavior.

In his WSJ letter, West said he regretted his actions, called them reckless, and said he was committed to accountability and change — though criticism surrounding the timing of the apology has continued.

Bully is expected to be released later this year.
