Christian Bale screamed for hours on ‘The Bride!’ to release despair

Christian Bale let out his frustrations literally — while transforming into Frankenstein’s monster for Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride!

The 52-year-old actor spent up to six hours in the make-up chair each day, and to cope with the long, grueling sessions, he began “screaming like crazy” to release his despair.

“I didn’t want to do it driving into work because I thought I might cause a crash,” Bale told Entertainment Weekly. “And I didn’t want to do it by myself because I thought everyone would just think I’m going nuts.”

Soon, his hair and make-up team joined in, turning Bale’s daily scream sessions into a full-blown crew ritual. “By the end, there were like 30 people who would hear us and run to the make-up trailer to be a part of it and scream as well,” he said, calling it a “great bonding experience.”

Bale stars alongside Jessie Buckley, who plays three roles in the film, including the title character. Buckley described the shoot as “the most intense, exhausting shoot of my life, but it was so fun.”

She also praised Gyllenhaal for advocating on her behalf. “[The director] had to basically convince the powers that be that it didn’t matter I didn’t have an Instagram account,” Buckley said. “You want a story to have life, and whatever the director feels is the way to make that come to life, that’s their choice.”
