Toy Story 5 trailer reveals terrifying new digital villain named 'Lilypad'
Woody returns to help Jessie as Bonnie becomes obsessed with her new device
The toys are back, but they face a chilling new rival that doesn't breathe, squeak, or have stuffing. In the freshly released trailer for Toy Story 5, the gang encounters Lilypad, a frog-themed smart tablet that threatens to end playtime forever.
Decades after Woody feared being replaced by Buzz Lightyear, the franchise has evolved from battling plastic to fighting pixels.
The story follows Bonnie, who becomes instantly mesmerised by the glowing device, leaving her traditional toys neglected.
The tension peaks during a confrontation where Jessie the cowgirl doll snaps, "You're not even listening to me," only for the tablet to reply with a sinister, "I'm always listening."
This digital villain forces the return of a now-balding Woody, who notes, "I don't know, Jessie. Toys are for play, but tech is for everything."
Scheduled for a 19 June release, the film sees Tom Hanks and Tim Allen return as Woody and Buzz.
The plot arrives at a time when society is increasingly concerned about the impact of excessive screen time on children’s development and social skills.
Following the massive success of the fourth instalment, which topped $1 billion and secured an Oscar, Pixar’s latest venture taps into the real-world anxieties of modern parenting.
With Jessie at the helm and their old leader back in the fold, the toys must find a way to win back Bonnie’s heart from the addictive pull of the digital world.
