Microsoft is introducing an AI system called "Copilot Tasks" designed to handle routine tasks in the background, the company revealed on Thursday.

This feature leverages its own cloud-based resources to manage various tasks, from setting up meetings to crafting educational outlines, while you focus on other activities.

According to Microsoft, you can communicate your needs to Copilot Tasks using everyday language and set it to handle assignments periodically, regularly, or just once. Copilot Tasks will deliver a report after completing its tasks.

Copilot Tasks can manage tasks like organizing your subscriptions and removing those you no longer use, as well as converting emails, attachments, and images into slide presentations.

It can also identify important emails and draft responses, plan an entire birthday celebration from choosing a venue to sending invitations, and regularly check new apartment listings each Friday, arranging property viewings.

Copilot Tasks seems to be Microsoft’s answer to the advanced AI functionalities introduced recently, such as Claude Cowork, ChatGPT Agent Mode, Perplexity Computer, and the Gemini-powered “auto-browse” tool in Google Chrome.

Microsoft indicates that Tasks will request authorisation before undertaking actions like processing payments or sending messages on your behalf.

Currently, Copilot Tasks is limited to an exploratory preview with a "small group" of users. Interested users can join a waiting list for Copilot Tasks from Microsoft’s site.
