Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco share raw truth about bipolar disorder
Selena Gomez describes her bipolar diagnosis as a complicated but freeing journey
Selena Gomez and her husband, Benny Blanco, have opened up about the realities of managing her bipolar disorder as a couple.
Appearing on Tuesday’s episode of Blanco’s podcast, Friends Keep Secrets, the 33-year-old singer described her diagnosis as “f–king complicated,” revealing a journey that involved various therapists and four stays in rehab.
Blanco, 37, shared that Selena occasionally experiences manic episodes that she might not recall later. “She’ll start to realize she’s having it after, and sometimes she doesn’t even remember when it’s happening,” he noted, adding that she is now “so hyper-aware” of her shifts.
Gomez emphasised that she feels no shame regarding her condition. Instead, she finds comfort in Blanco’s support.
“But it is helpful to have a partner that will understand where maybe the temperature is at, and meet you where you are, and then you kind of gradually understand what’s happening,” she explained.
This mutual understanding has allowed her to live more “freely,” moving away from the past where her reactions were “all inconsistent.”
First revealing her diagnosis in 2020 following a breakdown, the star now utilises specific "healing mechanisms." These include being “properly medicated” and using temperature therapy, such as cold water or heaters, which she finds “soothing at different times.”
By surrounding herself with a small circle of trusted people, she manages bad mental health days with transparency.
Her story serves as a powerful reminder that while living with bipolar disorder is complex, having an empathetic partner can make all the difference.
