Charlie Puth supports diverse art forms after Timothée Chalamet's opera ballet remarks
Chalamet is up for an Oscar at the upcoming Academy Awards for his role in 'Marty Supreme'
Charlie Puth spoke up for less mainstream art forms after Timothée Chalamet mentioned the popularity of ballet and opera.
On Wednesday (March 11), the "Changes" musician posted a message on X expressing his views on these lesser-known artistic styles.
"Even if an art form isn't widely popular, its influence can still be seen in modern music and films," Puth, 34, commented on the platform. "Today's popular music exists thanks to the popular music of centuries past."
Puth's remarks follow Chalamet, 30, joining Matthew McConaughey in February 2026 at a Variety and CNN town hall at the University of Texas at Austin.
During the event, the Marty Supreme actor made a comment about opera and ballet that some found dismissive.
"I wouldn't want to work in ballet or opera and say, 'Let's keep this alive even if no one really cares now.' All due respect to those in ballet and opera," Chalamet said at the event.
While chuckling, the Call Me By Your Name star added, "I just lost some viewers. I made an unnecessary point there."
In a remark on the Variety video, Isabelle Leonard, a Grammy-winning opera singer, expressed her surprise that someone as seemingly accomplished could express such limited and inarticulate views on art while considering himself an actor as one would typically expect.
Deepa Johnny, a Canadian mezzo-soprano opera singer, commented that Chalamet had a "disheartening perspective".
"The enchantment of live theatre, ballet, and opera is unrivaled. We should encourage these art forms and their artists and unite across various fields to achieve that. The impact of these mediums is enduring and transformative," she commented.
Thiago Fragoso, a notable Brazilian actor and singer, also commented on the Variety Instagram video, "Some things like Ballet and Opera deserve to exist, my friend. Check them out."
Chalamet is up for an Oscar at the upcoming Academy Awards for his role in Marty Supreme, while Puth is set to release his next album Whatever's Clever on March 27.
