Rachel Zegler hints at past romance woes ahead of Broadway role
The star says recent heartbreak helped her connect to her role in 'The Last Five Years'
Rachel Zegler opened up with humor about her past relationships.
The 24-year-old actress recently sparked conversation on social media after sharing a series of life updates and photos that included a meme referencing her dating experiences.
One particular slide caught the attention of fellow Broadway performer Roman Banks.
Banks commented on the post, pointing to a meme that read: “I can’t wait to be a girlfriend cause last time I was the boyfriend.”
Zegler quickly responded with a playful but candid remark: “Not just last time — EVERY TIME.”
The comment appeared to hint at the dynamics of her previous romances.
Zegler was recently rumored to have split from Nathan Louis-Fernand, whom she was first linked to in July 2025 after the pair worked together on the West End production of Evita.
Speculation about their relationship status intensified earlier this year when the actress shared cryptic social media posts and reportedly unfollowed him on Instagram.
Zegler was previously in a relationship with her West Side Story co-star Josh Andrés Rivera, though the two have remained on friendly terms since their split.
The actress has also hinted that recent heartbreak helped her connect with her latest stage role.
In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Zegler said experiencing disappointment in her personal life helped her better understand the character Cathy in The Last Five Years.
“Cathy was my dream role when I was 16, but I had never experienced heartbreak then,” she said. “Now I have, and that’s just what it means to be alive.”
Zegler also shared that therapy has played an important role in helping her navigate challenges, emphasizing that mental health support should be accessible to everyone.
“It’s how I’m able to show up every day,” she said, adding that she hopes discussions around mental health become more open and universal.
