New research has identified a significant disconnect between parental perceptions and the actual digital habits of teenagers regarding artificial intelligence.

Studies conducted by the Pew Research Centre and Common Sense Media reveal that 64% of adolescents now utilise chatbots, despite only 51% of parents believing their children interact with the technology.

This communication gap has left many guardians unaware that these tools are being used not just for academic assistance but as a primary source of emotional support and personal guidance.

Michael Robb, Head of Research at Common Sense Media, noted the speed of this adoption, stating: "Kids are often the vanguard of new technologies and more comfortable testing the boundaries of what new tech can do."

However, the trend of using AI for companionship has prompted warnings from psychologists. There are growing concerns that a reliance on automated systems for friendship may disrupt the development of vital social skills and critical thinking.

Experts have identified warning signs in teenagers who prefer interacting with AI over direct human contact, suggesting that such preferences may impact long-term emotional maturity.

Monica Anderson, Managing Director at the Pew Research Centre, reported that many parents have never discussed AI with their children, leaving teenagers to navigate these tools without adult supervision.

As AI becomes an essential component of both social and academic life, professionals are urging parents to initiate transparent conversations to ensure these powerful tools are used responsibly rather than as a substitute for human connection.
