Amazon's Echo, popularly known as Alexa, is receiving an AI enhancement, set to roll out throughout the UK.

With Alexa+, the voice assistant will engage more in conversation and offer proactive responses, according to Amazon.

Since its 2016 debut, Echo has been criticized for lacking evolution, while AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude have become more user-friendly.

"It will be fascinating to observe user reactions—this might divide opinions. Some may appreciate the casual, friendly exchanges, while others might find it unsettling," stated Jessica Miller, head of data insights at FDM/CCS Insight.

"UK users will see a noticeable transformation," she continued. "The Alexa+ experience is quite distinct."

Previously, when I asked Alexa if I needed an umbrella today, she replied, "no rain is expected today."

During a UK demonstration of Alexa+, the reply was, "actually, you can leave the brolly at home, with sunny skies and no rain in the forecast, you'll be sorted without it."

Ed Freed from the marketing firm Rapp UK once said Alexa was "mostly used as expensive kitchen timers" by most people.

However, Amazon states that 52% of UK residents have tried Echo, noting 114 billion "interactions" with Alexa since 2023—about 1,500 per person throughout the population.

Smart speakers have been criticized for stalling while other AI tools have surged ahead.

Alexa's competitor, Google Nest, is changing to Gemini for Home, incorporating Gemini AI technology, yet its smart speaker's screen display hardware hasn't been updated since 2021, informs Android Police website.

Alexa+ will be complimentary for Amazon Prime members (now £95 annually) or £19.99 monthly.
