TikTok distraction turns deadly as driver pleads guilty in father’s death
The tragic incident occurred shortly after Case dropped his children at a bus stop
A 22-year-old man has pleaded guilty after a fatal crash that killed a father of two, with authorities alleging he was watching TikTok videos while behind the wheel.
Ismaeel Malik admitted to causing the death of 58-year-old Norman Case, who was struck in Kelvedon, Essex, on October 22, 2024.
Emergency services responded to the scene at around 9:30 a.m., where Case died.
According to police, Malik was watching videos on TikTok at the time of the collision and had a history of using the app while driving.
He was arrested shortly after the incident on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Malik entered a guilty plea in court on March 28 and is scheduled to be sentenced on April 29.
Case had just dropped off his two children at a school bus stop on the morning of the crash.
In a statement, his wife Sarah described the devastating impact of his loss on their family.
“After dropping Fraser and Kate at the school bus stop, they would never have imagined not seeing their father alive again,” she said. “Mr. Malik caused Norman’s death, and all our lives will never be the same again.”
She added that her husband had been “the life and soul” of their family, leaving behind “a massive void that will never be filled.”
Case worked in business development for an audio-visual company and was an active member of his local cricket club.
Following his death, a fundraiser was set up to support his family.
