Joey Graceffa reflects on 'Amazing Race' producer's on-camera outing attempt
Graceffa publicly acknowledged being gay in a 2015 video
More than ten years after his Amazing Race adventure, Joey Graceffa recently shared a challenging experience with a producer on the CBS reality competition series.
The YouTube sensation recalled his participation in Seasons 22 and 24 of the program as “truly traumatic” when a producer “wanted me to come out” as LGBTQ on camera before he felt ready to do so.
“The Amazing Race was incredibly enjoyable, yet it was truly traumatic. It’s mind-boggling,” he explained to OUT Magazine.
“They urged me to come out on the show!”
Graceffa continued, “There was a gay producer who suggested, ‘You should come out on the show.’ I was like, ‘I’ll come out if you hand me that $1 million prize at the finish line!’ That didn’t happen. I wouldn’t have been prepared back then.”
Competing alongside Meghan Camarena in both his seasons of Amazing Race, the duo was eliminated in seventh place during Season 22 in 2013, and were sent home third during Season 24 in 2014.
Graceffa publicly acknowledged being gay in a 2015 video aptly named ‘YES I’M GAY‘ following the release of his music video for ‘Don’t Wait‘, which included a scene of him kissing another man.
