Pop culture often reinforces the idea that individuals must achieve total self-acceptance before seeking intimacy. Jeff Guenther, a licensed professional counsellor, shared a critical analysis on Instagram on Monday regarding the viral quote, “You can't love others until you love yourself.”

He argued that this statement is "total f-ing bs" and pointed to countless examples of people in crisis who remain deeply devoted to others.

Jeff Guenther noted, “People with genuine self-esteem love their kids with everything they have. People in the middle of a depressive episode show up for their friends.”

How the quote has been misused

The therapist explained that the phrase mistakenly suggests a prerequisite for connection. In reality, the following patterns are often at play:

  • Unresolved issues create patterns such as anxious attachment or self-abandonment.
  • Friction: These are conditions learned by the nervous system from childhood.
  • Misapplied prerequisites: The quote tells those who feel terrible that they have not yet earned a connection.

Jeff Guenther highlighted that for many, loving someone else is the actual path to healing. He stated, “You show up, you're consistent, you didn't bail when it got hard, and that becomes evidence that you're capable, that you're not what you thought you were.”

Connection is where the recovery often happens, rather than during a solitary waiting phase. Keeping people at a distance because one feels not "fixed enough" is often just loneliness supported by a nonsensical diagnosis from social media.
