Amber Riley opened up about why she has no plans to take on Broadway — at least for now — citing concerns over the industry’s demanding schedule and lack of performer support.

The former Glee star shared her candid thoughts on social media, responding to a post that criticized the intense workload faced by theater performers.

Riley agreed with the sentiment, stating that the current system is neither sustainable nor healthy.

“It’s not. That’s why when people hassle me about it, I say when the culture changes maybe I’ll do it,” she wrote.

“But as of now, asking people to sing at the top of their range eight shows a week without proper support or compensation, absolutely not.”

Riley further emphasized the physical toll of such a schedule, warning that even well-trained performers are at risk of injury.

She noted that vocal strain is a serious concern, adding that medical professionals would back up her claims.

Despite her stance on Broadway, Riley is no stranger to stage success. She previously starred in the London revival of Dreamgirls, earning a prestigious Laurence Olivier Award for her performance — a major recognition often considered the U.K.’s equivalent of the Tony Awards.

The 40-year-old performer also reflected on how her time on Glee, where she played Mercedes Jones, helped shape her work ethic.

She described the show’s grueling production schedule as “theater bootcamp,” requiring long hours of singing, dancing and acting with minimal rest.

“That good ol’ Glee sleep training — you better know how to function on four hours,” Riley previously said, highlighting the discipline and professionalism she developed during the series.

While many of her former co-stars have transitioned to Broadway productions, Riley appears content focusing on opportunities that align with her well-being — at least until industry standards evolve.
