Tensions are rising ahead of Hungary’s general election on 12 April as the ruling Fidesz party and its supporters accuse Meta of "electoral interference."

Pro-Orbán figures, including campaign chief Balázs Orbán and commentator Mario Nawfal, allege the social media giant has restricted Fidesz-linked content to influence the upcoming vote.

At the heart of the dispute are claims that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has faced censorship for posts that third-party fact-checkers labelled as unsubstantiated.

Supporters suggest that opposition parties may have orchestrated mass-reporting campaigns to suppress the government's message.

Specifically, critics have cited a video from Dóra Dávid, a Tisza Party MEP and former Meta legal advisor. In November 2025, Dávid shared footage instructing followers on how to report hate speech and misinformation.

While Fidesz supporters view this as a tool for political suppression, the action aligns with the European Union’s Digital Services Act.

Meta has firmly denied any wrongdoing or targeted restrictions. A company spokesperson clarified: "The site is secure and there is no threat to the public.

Operations continue as normal," adding that none of Mr Orbán’s posts has been deleted. The tech firm maintains that its rules apply to all users equally, utilising third-party fact-checkers across Europe to manage reported content.
