Google reveals it has enhanced Gemini to guide users towards mental health support during tough times.
This update comes as the company is confronting a wrongful death lawsuit accusing the chatbot of encouraging a man towards suicide, amidst various other legal matters related to perceived damages associated with AI products.
When interactions suggest a user may be experiencing a crisis related to self-harm or suicidal thoughts, Gemini currently triggers a “Help is available” module that steers users towards mental health assistance, like a suicide hotline or a crisis text line. Google explains the new update — essentially a redesign — aims to simplify this with a “one-touch” feature to provide quicker access to aid.
The assistance module also incorporates more caring replies intended “to motivate individuals to look for help,” according to Google.
Once the module is triggered, “the choice to seek professional help will persist visibly” during the ongoing conversation.
Google confirms it collaborated with clinical specialists for this redesign and pledges support for users facing crises.
Additionally, it announced a $30 million worldwide investment over the coming three years “to back international helplines.”
Like other major chatbot developers, Google emphasized that Gemini “is not a stand-in for professional mental health care, therapy, or emergency support,” but acknowledged that many individuals are turning to it for health-related information, particularly in moments of crisis.
This update arrives amid intensified scrutiny over how effective the industry's measures truly are.

Though Google often outperforms many competitors in these trials, it isn’t flawless. Other AI firms, such as OpenAI and Anthropic, have likewise worked to enhance their capabilities to detect and support users in distress.
