Florida Attorney General launches national security investigation into OpenAI

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has launched a formal investigation into OpenAI, citing grave concerns regarding public safety and national security.

In a statement released on Thursday, Uthmeier expressed fears that the company’s sensitive data and technology might be "falling into the hands of America’s enemies," specifically referencing the Chinese Communist Party.

This state-level probe adds to the mounting pressure on the artificial intelligence firm as it navigates a complex regulatory landscape ahead of a potential initial public offering this year.

The investigation also focuses on allegations that ChatGPT has been "linked to criminal behaviour," including the distribution of prohibited material and the "encouragement" of self-harm.

Crucially, Uthmeier suggested that the chatbot may have been used to "assist" the individual suspected of carrying out a shooting at Florida State University in April 2025.

This week, the family of a victim from that incident filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging the suspect was in "constant communication" with the AI leading up to the tragedy.

"AI should exist to supplement, support, and advance mankind, not lead to an existential crisis or our ultimate demise," Uthmeier stated, confirming that subpoenas are "forthcoming."

This scrutiny follows an October order from the Federal Trade Commission requiring tech giants to disclose how their chatbots affect child safety.

For professionals in the technical sector and those monitoring global celebrity and news trends, this case represents a pivotal moment in AI accountability.

The outcome could significantly influence how high-performance digital tools are managed and secured within the international market.
