Frankie Muniz is looking back at the early days of his career, revealing he almost skipped the audition that would change his life due to a scheduling clash with a Pizza Hut commercial shoot.

Speaking ahead of the upcoming revival Malcolm in the Middle, Muniz recalled being just 12 or 13 years old when he found himself torn between two major opportunities on the same day: a commercial gig he believed was a “big break” and an audition for the now-iconic sitcom.

At the time, Muniz said the Pizza Hut shoot was scheduled shortly after his audition, leaving him convinced he would not be able to make both commitments. With multiple child actors vying for the commercial role, he initially viewed it as his most important opportunity.

Despite his hesitation, Muniz ultimately attended the audition, later admitting he rushed through the process, eager to return to his other obligation. Looking back, he laughed at how little he realized the moment would define his career trajectory.

The actor noted that his impatient, slightly frantic approach during the audition ended up reflecting qualities that closely aligned with the character of Malcolm — something he only recognized years later while rewatching the series with his wife.

Muniz also shared that revisiting the show in 2017 gave him a new perspective on his performance, with his wife pointing out how naturally he embodied the character, a sentiment he initially found surprising.

The original series, which ran from 2000 to 2006, became a breakout hit and established Muniz as a household name. The story continues with the new revival Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, which brings back much of the original cast alongside new additions expanding Malcolm’s family and world.

The revival is set to stream starting April 10 on Hulu in the U.S. and on Disney+ internationally.
