Frankie Muniz recalls ‘bizarre’ first meeting with Bryan Cranston on set
The pair met while shooting the pilot episode of 'Malcolm in the Middle'
Frankie Muniz is revisiting one of his most unexpected early memories from Malcolm in the Middle, his first-ever encounter with Bryan Cranston, which he said was as bizarre as it was unforgettable.
The 40-year-old actor reflected on meeting Cranston on the very first day of filming the hit sitcom, which ran from 2000 to 2006 and made both actors household names.
Speaking to People, Muniz recalled that Cranston had only just been cast shortly before production began.
“He was the last person to be cast. I think it was even that morning. They finalised it and brought him in,” Muniz said.
The pair’s first scene together came from the pilot episode, featuring a now-iconic moment in which Lois shaves Hal’s back. But it was Cranston’s entrance that left a lasting impression.
“He came in, like, a skin-coloured Speedo and was like, ‘Hey, boys, I’m going to be your dad,’” Muniz recalled. “Obviously pretty awkward.”
Despite the unconventional introduction, Muniz said Cranston quickly proved himself to be a defining part of the series.
“Hal originally was supposed to be such a small character… kind of like an afterthought,” he said. “But Bryan is such an incredible actor and made the show, I think.”
Muniz also reflected on the close-knit atmosphere on set, describing a playful bond among the cast and crew that extended behind the scenes.
“We were always running behind the scenes kind of trying to prank people,” he said. “We had clothespins and we’d pin them on everybody’s backs… see how many you can get on before people realised.”
Although Malcolm in the Middle was cancelled in 2006, Muniz said the emotional weight of saying goodbye didn’t fully hit him until the final day of filming.
“It didn’t have any effect on me like I thought it would until literally the last shot of the last day,” he said.
“I looked around at all the cast… and two or three hundred crew members from over the seven years had come in. Everyone was there."
