Babysitter in custody after three year old child dies from gunshot
Barbara Edwards was arrested on 13 April following the death of Armani Deshawn Lyons
A three-year-old boy who was shot in the head while in the care of a babysitter on Easter Sunday has died, leading to the arrest of a 71-year-old woman.
Officers from the Atlanta Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 12:37 a.m. on 5 April near Washington Street SW.
Upon arrival, emergency services discovered young Armani Deshawn Lyons suffering from a catastrophic gunshot wound.
He was rushed to a local hospital, where medical personnel tragically pronounced him dead.
The child was reportedly in the care of Barbara Edwards at the time of the incident. Following a thorough investigation, homicide detectives obtained arrest warrants for Edwards and a second individual, 35-year-old Jermaine Hardeman.
Both suspects face charges of felony murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and second-degree cruelty to children.
While Edwards was taken into custody on 13 April after being located at a residence on Landrum Drive, Hardeman currently remains at large.
The victim’s mother shared her profound grief with "Atlanta News First", stating, "I'm not gonna see him again. No more laughing. No more playing.
No more nothing." Assistant Police Chief Carvan Tyrus confirmed the ongoing nature of the inquiry, questioning how the toddler ended up with such a severe injury.
Armani, described by family as being "full of life, joy, and innocence," would have celebrated his fourth birthday on 3 May.
A GoFundMe page has been established to support funeral expenses as the community mourns this devastating loss.
