The president of the annual SantaCon event has been indicted in federal court for allegedly stealing more than $1 million from charitable donations.

Stefan Pildes, who controlled the non-profit entity Participatory Safety, Inc., faces one count of wire fraud according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York.

Prosecutors claim that between 2019 and 2024, the popular New York City pub crawl raised at least $2.7 million, but over half of these funds were allegedly diverted by Pildes for his own personal enrichment.

The indictment describes a systematic "con game" in which Pildes exploited the generous holiday spirit of more than 25,000 attendees and participating venue owners.

U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton stated that instead of donating the raised millions to worthy causes, Pildes used the proceeds to finance a lavish lifestyle.

Alleged expenditures included extensive renovations to a lakefront property in New Jersey, luxury vacations, extravagant meals, and a high-end vehicle.

These actions were reportedly taken despite Pildes' public claims that he received no compensation for his role in organising the massive city-wide event.

SantaCon has long been a staple of the New York holiday season, traditionally framed as a philanthropic gathering.

However, prosecutors argue that Pildes operated a sophisticated scheme to defraud tens of thousands of donors through misleading claims about where their money was going.

While it remains unclear if the defendant has entered a formal plea, the investigation continues to look into the full scope of the diverted assets. Pildes had previously served as a primary voice for the event during its expansion.
